Testing Fedora 16 "Verne" - Beta

I made the upgrade of my operating system to Fedora 16 (a.k.a. Verne). The first thing I did was update my applications. Then I did the procedures mentioned in this link.

The download size was about 1.2 GB so I waited for it to end. I did not have to do any other commands in particular. When it was over, I restarted my computer to see if it had worked properly.
 

The first thing I noticed was the advance of a grub2 grub. After changing to black at the bottom of plymouth. Then I realized I had changed from the login screen. Now I like Fedora more.

Fedora 16 runs faster than the F15. Another interesting detail is the background. I loved it a lot. The design team did an excellent job. While this is still a Beta version but you can notice the improvement against the F15.

Some features that I have not had the opportunity to try are: 

• Virtualization.
• Ada Development.
• Cloud Tools.
• Blender 2.5.
• Other desktops (KDE, XCFE, LXDE). 
  

Two things seemed strange are that Mozilla Firefox 7.0.1 does not work properly (I tried to debug it, but it did not show any particular error) and the password entry screen that comes after "Lock Screen" appears with the previous theme (gray, not black).

Firefox stopped working after about thirty seconds of execution, avoiding any interaction with its user interface. Then I had to forcibly close it to continue working. I decided to use, as someone fix that problem, Opera.

Also something that I expected not to work was the Broadcom Wireless Adapter driver.  Normally I install it from RPMFusion repos, but right now they do not have the updated package.

Finally I can conclude that it was great to upgrade to Fedora Verne because, like Jules Verne, broke new ground in performance and aesthetics of the operating system.

Later I'll be doing more testing and placing posts if I can solve any of the errors I noticed. 

Probando Fedora 16 "Verne" - Beta

Realicé la mejora de mi sistema operativo al Fedora 16 (a.k.a. Verne).  Lo primero que hice fue actualizar mis aplicaciones. Luego realicé los procedimientos citados en este enlace.

El tamaño de la descarga fue de aproximadamente 1.2 GB así que esperé a que terminara. No tuve que realizar ningún otro comando en especial.  Cuando terminó todo, reinicié mi computadora para ver si había funcionado correctamente.

Lo primero que noté fue el avance de grub a grub2.  Después el cambio a negro en el fondo del plymouth.  Luego me percaté de que habían cambiado parte de la pantalla de inicio de sesión.  Ahora me gusta mucho más.

A nivel de rendimiento, corre más rápido que el F15.  Otro detalle interesante es el fondo.  Me encantó bastante.  El equipo de diseño hizo un excelente trabajo.  Si bien es cierto, esta versión todavía es un Beta pero se puede notar la mejoría contra el F15.

Algunas características que todavía no he tenido la oportunidad de probar son:

• Virtualización.
• Desarrollo Ada.
• Herramientas Cloud.
• Blender 2.5.
• Otros escritorios (KDE, XCFE, LXDE).

Dos cosas que si me parecieron extrañas fueron que Mozilla Firefox 7.0.1 no funcionara adecuadamente (traté de depurarlo, pero no me muestra ningún error en especial) y que la pantalla para ingresar la contraseña que sale luego de bloquear la pantalla apareciera con el tema anterior (gris, no es negro).

El Firefox dejaba de funcionar luego de, aproximadamente, treinta segundos de ejecución, evitando cualquier tipo de interacción con su interfaz de usuario.  Luego tenía que cerrarlo forzosamente para continuar trabajando.  Decidí utilizar, mientras se arreglase ese problema, Opera.

Algo que esperaba a que no funcionara era el controlador del Adaptador Wireless Broadcom.  Normalmente lo instalo de los repositorios RPMFusion, pero actualmente no tienen el paquete actualizado para este kernel.  

Finalmente puedo concluir que fue positivo realizar la actualización al Fedora Verne debido a que, al igual que Julio Verne, innovó en rendimiento y estética del sistema operativo.  Solamente espero que mejoren esas características que mencioné.

Más adelante estaré realizando más pruebas y colocando posts si logro solucionar alguno de los errores que noté.
