FLISOL Panama 2014

On April 26th, FLISOL Panama was held at the Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá. The event had talks, workshops, demonstrations and installations. The Fedora Local Team prepared two booth places for projects demonstrations and installations. Also we participate on the talks and workshops. Luis Bazan, Kiara Navarro and Alejandro Perez spoke about their experience on Fedora Project. Johel Batista was in charge of the streaming. I had a workshop about Basic Python Programming. Thanks to the sponsors and participants.

Workshops at UTP

We met at the Faculty of Computer Systems Engineering of Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá to do an mini-install fest. Despite having a poor attendance, we spent a pleasant time and contacted two boys interested in joining the project.

RESUMEN

El Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre (mejor conocido como FLISOL) de la Ciudad de Panamá se llevó a cabo con éxito en la Facultad de Ingeniería de Sistemas Computacionales de la Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá el sábado 27 de abril del presente año.

FAD - Santiago Packaging Challange

On September 24, part of Fedora Panamá went to Santiago, Veraguas to give a presentation and introduction about Package Manteinance using Fedora.

There was an excellent attendance and better yet, a huge turnout. The students from the Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, had a supreme interest in learning.

Part of the morning was dedicated to the installation of all necessary work tools (a negative point was that the Internet speed was terrible).

Then we divide the group into two rooms. In a room, Alejandro Perez (aeperezt) speak about RPMDev and all issues concerning it. Similarly, Luis Bazan (LokoMurdok) and Juan Barba (xHaksx) explained these issues in the other room.

After lunch we brought both rooms and explained to all, the entire process of packaging an application for Fedora. The interesting thing is that it came a little challenge: modify an orphaned package done in Python and deliver it to all present. They should correct it and make it work.

Only three managed to do so. The rest, despite having failed his mission, were on track. This indicates that the audience learned. Finally we distribute media and presented our conclusions.

FAD - Santiago Reto Empaquetado

El 24 de septiembre, parte de la comunidad Fedora Panamá se fue a la Santiago de Veraguas a dar una presentación e introducción al Mantenimiento de Paquetes en la Comunidad Fedora.

Hubo una excelente asistencia y, mejor aún, una gran participación.  los chicos, estudiantes de la Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, tenían un supremo interés en aprender.

Parte de la mañana fue dedicada a la instalación de todas las herramientas de trabajo necesarias (un punto negativo fue que la velocidad del Internet era pésima).

Luego, dividimos el grupo en dos salones.  En un salón, Alejandro Pérez (aeperezt), explicó sobre RPMDev y todo los temas concernientes al mismo.  De igual manera, Luis Bazán (LokoMurdok) y Juan Barba (xHaksx) explicaron dichos temas en el otro salón.

Después del mediodía reunimos a ambos salones y expliqué, a todos, el proceso completo de empaquetar una aplicación para Fedora.  Lo interesante de esto es que surgió un pequeño reto: modificamos un paquete huérfano hecho en Python y se lo entregamos a todos los presentes.  Ellos debían corregirlo y hacerlo funcionar.

Sólo tres lograron hacerlo.  El resto, a pesar de haber fallado su misión, iban por buen camino.  Esto nos indica que la audiencia aprendió.  Finalmente distribuimos media y expusimos nuestras conclusiones finales.

Software Freedom Day

On September 17 we live in the "Software Freedom Day", an event of major public education both nationally and internationally. On this occasion we celebrated at Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, through videos, speeches and debates. The audience was acceptable. They were very active.

Some of the presentations were:

• "Fedora Electronic Lab" by Kiara Navarro.
• "Android" by Chris Fawcett.
• "Contribuing to Wikipedia" by Mónica Mora.
• "CoderBuddy" by Adrian Scott.
• "Fedora Design" by Juan Barba.
• "Fedora Infraestructure" by Luis Bazán. 
• "Fedora RPMDev LATAM" by Abdel Martínez. 
• "Floss-PA" by Diego Tejera. 

In addition, Johel Batista (Ayudinga) made advertising of his website. Meanwhile, there was a debate entitled "GNU/Linux on the desktop, It is ready for the masses?" moderated by Chris Fawcett. Divided views and many valid points emerged but mostly, shared ideas.

Finally, there was a small Floss-PA gathering, after the event. I thank all those who attended and, in some way, helped organizing this event.

Software Freedom Day

El 17 de septiembre vivimos el "Día de la Libertad de Software", un evento de educación pública muy importante tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. En esta ocasión lo celebramos en la Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá a través de videos, charlas y debates. Hubo una audiencia aceptable. La misma estuvo muy activa. 

Algunas de las presentaciones fueron:

• "Aportando a Wikipedia" por Mónica Mora.
• "CoderBuddy" por Adrian Scott.

• "Floss-PA" por Diego Tejera. 

Además, Johel Batista (Ayudinga) hizo propaganda de su sitio web.  Entre tanto, hubo un debate titulado: "GNU/Linux en el escritorio, ¿Listo para las masas?" moderada por Chris Fawcett. Surgieron opiniones divididas, muchos puntos de vista válidos y comentarios atinados, pero, principalmente, se compartieron ideas.

Finalmente hubo una pequeña reunión Floss-PA, luego del evento.  Agradezco a todos las personas que asistieron y que, en alguna forma, ayudaron a la organización de este evento.

BST - Second Day

Last Saturday we were at the second session of the "Escuelita Fedora" in the BST. I had the opportunity to make several presentations on FAS, CLA and RPMDev.

The audience showed much interest. Finally, we divided the class in documentation/translation and packaging. At the end, the class was equitatively distributed.

I expect people to complete the objectives of the BST.  I will continue blogging this event next Saturday.

BST - Segundo Día

El sábado pasado estuvimos en la segunda sesión de la Escuelita Fedora en el BST.  Yo tuve la oportunidad de hacer varias presentaciones sobre FAS, CLA y RPMDev.

La audiencia presentó mucho interés.  Finalmente segmentamos al salón en documentación/traducción y empaquetamiento.  A las finales, el salón quedó distribuido equitativamente.

Espero que la gente siga interesada y cumpla lo acometido en el BST.

BST - First Saturday

Hello. Today was held the first Saturday of the "Escuelita Fedora" in the laboratories of the library of the Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá. There was a good attendance.

Initially, Monica Mora, head organizer of this initiative, said a few words of welcome and thanks to the Fedora community for their participation in the BST.

After that, the presentations began. Alejandro Perez explained the Documentation and Translation in the Fedora community, then I explained what it is Packaging about and Luis Bazan explained how IRC works. Finally we ate pizza.

There was wide acceptance of the topics. Personally I hope to have the same or greater support for the following Saturday. It is important to note that this is a good opportunity for the Fedora community to grow.

BST - Primer Sábado

Hola.  Hoy se desarrolló el primer sábado de la "Escuelita Fedora" del Bug Squashing Team en los laboratorios de la biblioteca de la Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá.  Hubo una buena asistencia.

Inicialmente, Mónica Mora, organizadora principal de esta iniciativa, dijo unas palabras de bienvenida y agradecimiento a la comunidad Fedora por su participación en el BST.  

Después comenzaron las presentaciones.  Alejandro Pérez explicó sobre la Documentación y Traducción en la comunidad Fedora, después yo expliqué de qué trata el Empaquetamiento y Luis Bazán explicó como trabaja el sistema IRC.  Finalmente comimos pizza.

Hubo gran aceptación de los temas.  Personalmente espero tener la misma o mayor asistencia para los siguientes sábados.  Es importante resaltar que esta es una buena oportunidad para que la comunidad Fedora crezca.

Actualmente no dispongo de fotografías, pero pronto estaré agregando enlaces a los álbumes tomados por Alejandro Pérez.

Fedora Installation - UTP

Friday was a total success for the Fedora local community because Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, Panama's number one university, authorize the installation of Fedora 15 on some of the Computational Systems Engineering Faculty labs, located on Victor Levi Sasso campus.

First, we decided to install in stages.  On Friday June 3 we install the operating system.  A week later we will configure and install basic applications.  For further installations we are considering make a "spin" for the university and make network installations.

On the first stage (installation), Nicolás Nieszawski and Juan Barba (students of this university and members of the Fedora local team) helped me out.  It was interesting and rewarding.  There were no problems during installation.

Instalación de Fedora - UTP

El día viernes fue de total éxito para la comunidad local Fedora porque la Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, catalogada como la número uno en Panamá, autorizó la instalación de Fedora 15 en algunos laboratorios de la facultad de Ingeniería de Sistemas Computacionales, ubicada en su sede principal, el campus Víctor Levi Sasso.

Inicialmente, decidimos realizar la instalación por etapas.  El viernes 3 de junio instalábamos el sistema operativo.  La semana siguiente estaremos realizando configuraciones e instalaciones de aplicaciones básicas.  Para instalaciones posteriores estamos considerando hacer un "spin" para la universidad y hacer las instalaciones por red.

En la primera etapa (instalación) me acompañó Nicolás Nieszawski y Juan Barba, estudiantes de la universidad y miembros de la comunidad Fedora.  Fue un trabajo muy interesante y gratificante.  No hubo ningún problema al realizar las instalaciones.

II Iber. Congress of Free Knowledge

"Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá" with "Consorcio de Tecnología Social Libre" organized the "II Iberoamerican Congress of Free Knowledge" with the slogan "Building a Knowledge Society with Free Software".  With a duration of three days (October 20 - 22) it was done at "Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá".  The main objective of the congress is to promote the use, development, management and application of Free Software in the business, educative and governmental areas.

Day 1 (October 20) 

It was an active day, full of people and success for the Fedora Community.  Alejandro Pérez, Juan Barba and I were doing demonstrations, explanations about Fedora.  Also we showed screencast of Fedora 14.  We gave approximately 100 CDs with Fedora Goddard.
An important event that day was the intervention of Michael "Monty" Widenius.  He explained his MySQL y MariaDB project to the students.  After the congress he had a little conversation with the representants of differents local communities.  Most of the participants were Fedora members (50% approximately).  He recommend us to participate together to make successful the filosophy of free software.

 
Day 2 (October 21) 

Less active but interesting as the previous day.  We dedicate that day to attend the doubts of the previous day and to share CDs with Fedora 13.  Juan Barba and I were attending the people.  Appear new adepts to the Fedora Community: Rogelio Moreno.

 
Day 3 (October 22) 

We only respond to some doubts about Fedora.  Juan Barba and I made Fedora installations on virtual machines and partitions.  I considered that it was a success and we can see the benefit of it in the future.
